Darling, there are just as many ways

of saying goodbye as there are ways
of letting you go. The boat is narrow

like the width of my heart after
impossible loss, cruel resignation;

this heart you ride in. Love, if this is how
you choose to leave me let me let you.

second sem na naman [Nov. 4th, 2009|09:51 pm]

[Current Mood | tired]
[Current Music |come around, rhett miller]

My schedule this sem is probably the weirdest I've had in my UP life. To elaborate:

Huhu. First, as you would notice, my tuesday wednesday schedule is heavy thanks to the onetime big time 3-hour classes. 167 is supposedly politics in film or something like that, and artstud is cinema in philippine culture. Ayooos. Not bad since I'm really into those subjects. And the fact that I know a lot of people taking the class with me is a plus plus. 167, i have a lot of orgmates with me; and for artstud, good ol' rea would be my buddy.

Now here comes the problematic part: Thursday I got a 4hour and 30 min break. 4hours and 30min! SHIT! What will I do then? I have a feeling tatamarin ako to go to my 4-530pm class but since it's 110, i'm still hesitant. 110 is political analysis, and from what i've been hearing puro mga modules ang gagawin. Siguro I can use my uber long break for lib hours. Or, I can go home and sleep. Haha.

I love my fridays. 144 isn't so bad daw, but still, it's kraft (again!) and its about IR (AGAIN). I was supposed to get 153 but unfortunately my slot went to someone else. Aargh. Sa bagay, having a saturday class is kinda iffy. Kakatamaaad. Yun nga lang I'm kind of getting second thoughts since kraft is a CHALLENGE. 180 is supposed to be enough. I don't know why I'm taking him again for good. The fact that he's one hell of a good professor prolly convinced me enough to stay. Taena sana hindi ako matempt magdrop. IR is interesting naman. Right? *gulp*

Tomorrow, I pay. I might sound really geeky but I'm kinda excited for next sem. Bring it on!

prolonged agony [Oct. 14th, 2009|11:49 pm]

[Current Mood | tired]

Today was the start of my Official Hell Week. Of course, it kicked off with the 180 finals--which Shane, Arby, Kaye and I (and I'm sure everyone else) stayed up the entire night/morning for. Shooooocks. Can I just say, out of the 5 possible essay questions that sir posted 48 hours before our exam, he had to choose the least likely (and most ambiguous) one, regarding Feminist IR:

"Runyan argues that  IR Feminism must leave its "home" discipline because it is far more diverse than and steps outside quite a bit more than what the IR claims in its principle discourse. Is this statement True or False?"

Shiiiiit. We didn't see that coming. We, or at least I, were/was hoping that sir would pick a more substantial, more solid question than that. Like the past two exams, the one he chose was the essay that I had the shortest, least precise and researched, and ambiguous answer. Fuck. What'd I write? My answer was True/False, that both can be taken into consideration. Just that in two sheets of yellow paper, one back to back and one just a half-page filled. No idea what I wrote to make it long, but I'm crossing my fingers Sir Kraft would decipher my ideas, consider it somehow, and give me a decent grade. For the last time, gahhh!

Rushed to Psych afterwards, 1130-1. Was really sabaw, tired, and mostly hungry. Then at 1 (well to be more precise, a quarter past 1) I rushed to the FC for our 157 make up class-slash-quiz bee. Haha, it was actually fun. Despite the fact that I wasn't able to study (who did, anyhows?), Arby (yey for coincidence!) Othello and I wormed our way into 3rd place for a 3-point incentive in the second exam. Not bad at all! Managed to sneak a quick late lunch of a homemade sandwich afterwards. 230-530 naman I was in our PanPil class. We finally finished reporting, and talked about the (still to be produced) documentary.

Whew. All in a day's work. I was only able to have a decent meal at 730pm, since when I got home at around 6, I collapsed on the soft, warm comforting bed and dozed off. What a difference a nap makes in times of these!

Anyway hindi pa tapos kalbaryo. Friday's the psych exam and submission of the stat finals. Saturday, macroecon exam. Monday documentary-making ($&^^%!). Wednesday 157 exam. Thursday deadline of 157 paper (which I have yet to start on! damn. Kailan ko kaya masisingit yuuun?). Shit shit shit.

8 days to go...

omg don't kill me, finals week! [Oct. 11th, 2009|09:41 pm]

[Current Mood | busy]

 *breathes in, breathes out*

OKAY. I CAN DO THIS. TWO MORE WEEKS (two more weeks???!), BABY. THEN WE'RE OFF TO NEGROS FOR SOME DISCONNECTION AND R & R.

Ok, I have no idea why I started writing in all-caps. But I'm feeling the stress already, that's for sure. Last week I've been having trouble sleeping to the point where I cry my eyes out, thinking about the stuff that needs to be done, and other useless things. For the weekend, I've conveniently gotten a cold, thus marking me quite useless for two days. Now, i'm turning into a neurotic wreck, cramming org (yes org!) and academic-related junk into my software. Life, oh life. Can't wait to get over and done with this sem already. It's been quite... blah.

First round of enlistment's drawing closer! Here's my ideal schedule:

Despite the fact that I'm mostly having majors next sem, I'm still pretty psyched about it. Polsc167 is Special Topics in Political Dynamics under Sir F, and rumors are circulating that it's Politics in Film next sem. Dude, how cool is that? POLITICS AND FILM ALL IN ONE CLASS!  Awesome! And from what I've been hearing, Sir F is a good prof. A bit challenging, but good. My 110's under Ma'am Atienza, and 153 is under Sir Baylon. Pwede! Tas may L Arch aka super GE (to make up for an MST GE) and Socio 125, which is Sociology in Religion, under Lanuza. I've heard so many great things about him even way back in freshman year that I've been considering of getting a Socio10 class under his wing--but this one's even better. The topic sounds interesting, too.

Ano pa ba? Oh yes, Econ 190.1. I didn't even read the course name. It was required, so what the hell. Kahit si Alburo, at least I know marami akong karamay. Haha.

I'm crossing my fingers I'll get these subjects, because as of now, I'm back to regular priority. *gulp*

Back to work.

According to the news, Ondoy has been the worst ever to hit our country after, what was that, 40 years? It's devastating to see and read about the effects of this storm. I've had my own share of stories about last Saturday (some good some terrible---which I might expound later on, if I'm in the mood haha), but I'm thankful my family and I are safe.

Fast fwd two days later, here I am at home itching to help the others who are deeply affected by the nightmare. the magic word: NARDA! [Sep. 24th, 2009|10:55 pm]
[Tags|, , ]
[Current Mood | nerdy]
[Current Music |stereolove, taken by cars]

News from the oh so reliable FB:
RT @katwonderful: Narda reunites for one night for Alexis' Tribute Night on the 30th @ Magnet BHS. We'll play songs from our earliest EP's

OMG HOW GREAT IS THAT?! Narda's only, like, my favoritest band in the local music scene since I was a freshman in high school!! Deyum. I've been a fan ever since my brother (second year ahs student at that time i think?) laid out their EPs after coming home from their fair, and we played them in or (now gathering dust) player. I've seen them in their gigs at AHS once or twice, but never when they played songs from, like, burador (this chill acoustic cd that has a really raw, but really genius tinge to it) or suwerte, my favorite EP. God I love those songs. They were good times. Narda plays the kind of songs that give you this rare, warm, and really nice (for lack of an appropriate word) feeling. It's like you're in a different plane altogether. Or maybe it's just me, but I tend to associate pretty good memories whenever I hear Tanga, Crime Fighting Mama, or Meron Ba. Formika was good---they finally were able to come up with a CD, although they definitely sounded more mature than ever (not a bad thing though). It's also because of their mtvs  during this time that I discovered the genius of (former bassist) Wincy Ong. God. He's amazing. Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't he also the genius behind the six cycle mind Magbalik vid which I happen to really really love. There's an exquisite thing about these videos, parang may nacoconvey na melancholy. Pero ANYWAY.. (omg I'm ranting. Going back.) How many times have I fantasized over doing a music video of their Formika songs, I cannot count. It was pretty life changing. It practically coincided with the phase in my life when I was idealistic enough to want to become a filmmaker living off in NY or some other big random city through odd jobs.. Haha. Inspiring is the wurd.

Their sophomore (and apparently last album :(), Discotillion, was almost miles away from where they left off in terms of sound (and hey even image!), but I think it was a powerful follow-up to Formika. The sound was like Formika's evil twin sister. The awesomeness and wit of Narda was still there, dagdagan lang ng angas at punk/electronica in the mix. I particularly love Molotov (first time I heard it on NU, di ako makaget over. It sounded like an import from the UK or something, only it was Pinoy. Sobrang alien kasi ng tunog that it works). Although I must say I prefer their older, more raw sound than this, Narda's still Narda. Sayang lang talaga I never saw them play Discotillion songs live.. Yeah yeah, fail. I can only imagine the energy that they bring. Tsk tsk.

Ironic how, now that I'm in college, the time in my life when I've dreamt of being able to go to gigs often and all, I hardly watch or even know of bands like Narda in the local music scene. FAIL. Anyway, point here is, sana mapanuod ko sila. This band really means a lot to me. I like the others out there, but there ain't nothing like Narda.

Lord, for one night. Sana makateleport akong High Street.

Wishful Thinking for Philippine Cinema by the late Alexis Tioseco [Sep. 7th, 2009|12:36 pm]
[Tags|]
[Current Mood | hopeful]
[Current Music |you know what, N.E.R.D.]

Reposted from kuya ej's facebook note, from the "Concentrated Nonsense" blog. I know this is kind of late, but it's better now than never.

Alexis Tioseco. Never knew the guy, but I really admire his passion for Philippine Cinema. Read his entry: Makes you want to do something for the industry, doesn't it?

May all of us be inspired to continue his advocacy, and do something for this art form. May he and his girl rest in peace...

Wishful Thinking for Philippine Cinema
By Alexis A. Tioseco
March 15, 2009, 3:57 am

I wish that the Film Development Council of the Philippines would understand the value of the money they’re given and consider going to Paris and spending P5 million of their P25 million allotment for a showcase given by a young festival an investment, and not just a vacation.

They support filmmakers with finished films to go abroad to festivals for the pride they bring their country—I wish instead they would support their films locally, and help them get seen by a larger Filipino audience.

I cry for the loss of Manuel Conde’s Juan Tamad films.

I cry for a country that can’t convince that one Filipino-American who owns the only known print of Conde’s Genghis Khan in its original language to return (i.e. sell) the film back to his mother country.

I cry for the generations of Filipinos, myself included, that can no longer see Gerry De Leon’s Daigdig ng Mga Api, and instead have scans of movie ads to admire on the internet (with sincere thanks to Simon Santos and James De la Rosa).

I mourn a heritage that has allowed through neglect the prints of Mario O’Hara’s Tatlong Taong Walang Diyos and Peque Gallaga’s Oro, Plata, Mata to turn flush sepia.

I cry for a Union Bank and University of the Philippines that conspire in apathy to let the master negatives of treasures produced by Bancom Audiovision rot in rooms only air-conditioned half the day and in cans untouched for years and years.

I pray for a city government or even enterprising and concerned theater owners to consider setting aside 50 centavos or a peso of a ticket for the preservation of our national audiovisual heritage. There have been flood taxes siphoned from movie tickets for crying out loud—this should be easy!

I wish Cinemalaya, which, thanks to the media and the government’s press mileage behind it, has a great festive excitement, would actually put their efforts in the service of Philippine cinema, and not their own self-involved attempt to start a micro-industry.

I wish filmmakers would stop listening to Robbie Tan.

I wish Cinema One, which takes more risks, gives more money and often produces better films than Cinemalaya, would actually give filmmakers some rights to their work and stop swindling them.

I wish Cinemanila, which has introduced to the country more great films than any other institution, doesn’t stop showing them on 35mm.

I wish Cinemanila would publish their full schedule in advance: it’s difficult to plot what films to watch when you don’t know which ones will show again.

I wish the Goethe- initiated Silent Film Festival, with live scores by Filipino musicians, would continue annually, and that one year they get to show a Chaplin, a Griffith, a Dreyer, and maybe a Vertov or Medvedkin.

I wish Lav Diaz would have larger budgets to maneuver and shoot with. And would work with the ace production designer Cesar Hernando once again.

I wish more people saw Lav Diaz’s films rather than just respecting his stance, and using him as a symbol.

I wish Raymond Red would get to make Makapili and/or return to making fantastic shorts in the experimental mode.

I wish Raymond Red would still get to shoot on celluloid.

I wish John Torres would sacrifice the image quality of his HDV camera for the special intimacy and spontaneity he is able to achieve with his 1ccd camera. Or get a smaller HDV camera.

I wish Mike De Leon would make another movie… please.

I wish Roxlee would get enough money to buy the time necessary to make an animated feature.

I wish everyone would buy a copy of Nicanor Tiongson and Cesar Hernando’s richly illustrated The Cinema of Manuel Conde.

I wish there were more books on Philippine cinema.

I wish a book series was started that published classic screenplays.

I hope Noel Vera gets to write his book on Mario O’Hara.

I wish a close study of the entire oeuvre of Ishmael Bernal were made.

I wish older commentators would understand: Lino Brocka is dead.

I wish younger filmmakers would understand: Lino Brocka compromised when he had to because he had to, and perhaps even, at times, too much. You are living in a different time. The excuse that Brocka made more than 60 films therefore you can afford your own mediocre ones does not hold water.

I wish we had less tourist cinema.

I wish we had less formula cinema—“real-time” anyone?

(More under the cut..) )

[Current Mood | hungry]
[Current Music |What New York Used to Be, The Kills]

I just spent the entire day sleeping, eating, and surfing from one fashion blog to another today. Great job, me!

Haha but it's no problem. It's kind of a good thing actually, since the photos are incredibly inspiring. I've started to fill up a folder that has all sorts of photos of people in the streets, my favorite "genre" of fashion looks. Iba kasi talaga. As I've probably mentioned before, it doesn't have the air of snobbish, elitist vibe. The pictures all have so much energy and life in them, and I'm not just talking about the clothes but also the people who wear them, the context they're in, all those elements. Ang sarap nila gayahin: Not in the literal sense, but I mean get inspiration from the little details, and transform it to your own interpretation.

Naturally, Scott Shuman's The Sartorialist became my starting point. I love this guy. I've been visiting his site almost daily now, and since tonight I had the time to spare (or...not, but still I made time to spare. Haha!), I checked some his archives. Damn. He's really inspiring. He has indeed come a long way in terms of subjects and the quality of photos, but still you could tell his vision was constant ever since the beginning. He has a knack for taking pictures of people in their element, wherein you can almost tell the qualities of that person based on what they look, how they pose, etc. (Ano ulit tawag namin dun sa Art Stud? Semiotics?) I love how his photos speak for themselves. And the idea of him being a jet-setter who takes pictures of interesting people on the streets is very romantic.

He recently published a collection of his works, and I've been lusting for a copy. In the meantime, I guess the random collection of stolen Sartorialists would have to suffice.

I've also come across a blog of a chic Parisian illustrator who is rapidly become one of my favorite artists: Garance Dore. Again, like Shuman, he takes beautiful photographs of mostly European fashionistas. I haven't exactly explored her site as much as I have the Sart's, but by the quality and kind of works she posts, I can tell this woman has real talent. Her illustrations, especially are exquisite. I would kill for her talent in sketching. I'm currently using one of them as my wallpaper, and looking at it every time is like a breath of fresh air.

The New York Times' Look Book is also great. I can't believe I only discovered this website now! I've seen a book compilation of this before in Powerbooks, I think, and I was supposed to buy it.  I don't know why I never came back for it though, haha.

I've always loved Gotham City, with its diverse and fiercely-independent citizens where anything goes. I told myself I'd live them even just for a few years, to study film or something. So this book was kind of a reinforcer to this dream, 'cause everyone seems so interesting! While the Europeans love clean, textured, and classic looks, NY has a fusion of all sorts of styles: Uptown meets downtown chic, east meets west (like the Swedish copywriter below who looks like an older Madeline who spent a few years in Harajuku. AWESOME), etc. Also, I love the fact that NYT not just took snapshots and add a short paragraph or two of how the photographer was able to spot the person, but they also interviewed the people about their lifestyle. I swear, I can spend the entire day browsing through their archives and not get bored.

How fun is that! Haha! Anyway, those three are basically where I kept going back and forth from. I went to some small and less popular fashion sites and got a few photos as well, but nothing compares to those sites. Ugh, they're amazing. I think I'm getting brainwashed.

Oh and before I quit blogging and start watching some Nat Geo writing my Pan Pil paper, can I just say how much I LOVE stylish couples?! They're such an awesome phenomenon. Not the matchy-matchy ones per se, but those whose outfits practically complement the other. Alam kong kasapi ako sa NBSB na mga nilalang pero shet, I'd easily swoon for a man who knows how to put on an outfit, and look stylish, sexy, and straight. Hahahaha! Stylish couples are a force to be reckoned with. Kudos to them :)

[Current Mood | fat]

Grabe lang itong araw na to. I ate so much today to compensate perhaps for the many weeks I have been neglecting to give my body three square meals, especially and specifically during school days. It's not that I'm getting thinner (asa na lang ako? hahaha), wala lang, it's just that I don't treat it well when it comes to food.

Today was no different--I actually ate A LOT, and sadly its composed of stuff like chinese fast food (hello MSG!), donuts (hello excessive sugar!), fishballs (hello god knows what!), burgers and fries (hello killer cholesterol, salt, fat, among other things!), imported sausages (hello processed whathaveyous!) and did I miss anything? Oh yeah. The pancit canton I wolfed down for breakfast before storming to Econ Audi for the second long exam. Hello, er, noodley things.

Shit. Now that I did a brief review of what I've consumed, kadiri, I feel like a pig. No wonder the pair of jeans I bought (for 350Php at greenhills! YEY!) was kinda tight. Yuuck. Trick there is to wear the jeans right before munching on anything for the day so it'll be sort of like my modern corset... only in the butt/waist area. Haha sabaw.

My only excuse for now that I have a bajillion stuff on the things to do list that I have not exactly been doing progress on, unfortunately. I need energy! To think! Read, write! And, er, sit down in front of our desktop trying to start on a paper (while maybe checking random people's posts in Facebook. Grreat)? Weird thing is that even if I know I have a lot to do, I'm still able to get at least 5-6 hours of sleep and successfully cram for class. Yes, being the perennial geek that I am I like to spend time in the library catching/cramming readings and rewritting the scribbles I call notes. Despite that, strangely I still feel stress. Really badly. I guess I 've always had this hard time coping with it, and till now I have problems with it....

Which is why it feels so damn good to eat!  With mom here, too, it's hard to resist. She made us Banana Creme Pie the other night which I absolutely loved, and her pasta dinners are always yummy. Tomorrow's sunday lunch will be here at J Abad so I'm sure I will be eating a lot again. Food food food. Food is good.

P.S. Oh and kanina pala while waiting for mom and honey, I finally had the chance to sit down and watch TV for leisure. I was watching Natgeo and guess what they were showing! Food Lover's Guide to the Planet. AHHH! I love that documentary!!! They were showing food from Korea, I think. Not my favorite episode but I always love how they present the food from all over the planet, document it, and weave such fascinating stories about it. Heaven talaga ang manuod nun. Hahahaha. Yey. Or maybe I was just happy that the harsh econ exam was finally over? Pwede rin. Yun laaang.

A quote for today which caught my attention:

"I hope that one day you will experience of doing something you do not understand for someone you love."
Jonathan Safran Foer, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close

Awwww... sweet. I want to read that book tuloy.

...just looks like one of the funnest thing in the world. Imagine: fashion, photography, traveling, a diverse mix of people, the outdoors, all these elements meshed in one art form. Intense.

I can tell it's not as easy as it looks, but Scott Schuman does make it look effortless. He's amazing. I am a huge fan, ever since before. Taking photographs of people who wear fascinating frocks all over the world must be one of the best jobs there is. Being a big-time contributor to big fashion glossies does help, too. I love the fact that his photos have so much energy in them, as opposed to, say, the under-aged, stick thin models you see sulking from one pose to another in the pages of Vogue or Bazaar. And he brings so much creativity in the shots, too. Just look at the street urban new york setting.  Plus, check out the frocks these kids are wearing! I'm willing to rock the clothes on the girl in the second picture, to the rightmost, haha. Aargh--they're achingly hip. These photos are perfect. <3

Haha ok, this post is so far from my physical and mental state right now. I just need a buffer. Back to 180, back to reality!
